A steady-rest for lathes &c. for turning long workpieces which warp and run eccentrically during the machining operation, comprises transmission - means between the machinespindle and steady-elements so that the latter oscillate in timed relation to the work and follow the eccentricity thereof. This eccentricity may be caused by relief of stresses during machining, such eccentricity being measured by gauge and the steady-elements set accordingly. A bracket 18, Fig. 3, longitudinally adjustable along a guide 17, on the lathe frame, supports a member 23 which carries the steady-rollers 40. The member 23 may be adjusted towards and from the work 6 by bolts 21 secured to the bracket 18 and engaging slots in the member 23. The steady-rollers 40, Fig. 1, are supported on squared oblique spindles 36 by hubs 37 adjustable along the spindles to vary the eccentricity of running from zero to a maximum at the right-hand end. The spindles 36 are driven by gears 28, 29, 32, from a shaft 13 carried in a separate bracket 11 on the lathe frame. A telescopic connection and universal joints connect the shaft 13 and the spindle 25 carrying the gear 28. The oblique spindles are driven at the same speed as the work by a chain-drive from a sprocket 7 on the spindle to a sprocket 10 on the shaft 13. The sprocket 10 is secured to a hub 14 by bolts 16, the holes for which are elongated to permit adjustment to bring the movement of the steady rollers into phase agreement with any eccentric running of the work 6. If a larger adjustment is required the pinion 28 may be released on its shaft to vary the phase relationship. |
