PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently purifying L-carnitine, by which compounds contained can be removed from the L-carnitine having low purity in high efficiency, especially to provide a method for crystallizing an L-carnitine mixture in a solvent containing butanol, or a method for obtaining the purified L-carnitine, comprising contacting the L-carnitine mixture with the solvent containing the butanol to separate the L-carnitine from compounds contained in the L-carnitine mixture. SOLUTION: This method for purifying the L-carnitine comprises treating the L-carnitine mixture containing one or more impurities with a solvent containing butanol. Especially the purification operation is preferably carried out so that the content of water contained in the butanol-containing solvent in which the L-carnitine is dissolved is <0.6%.
