PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability of formation of a gas barrier layer while the gas barrier layer having no variance in thickness is provided on a side surface of a liquid crystal cell. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device has: a protective sheet 1 disposed covering the entire surface of an upper substrate 25 of the liquid crystal cell 2; and a frame body 3 disposed opposite to the side surface of the liquid crystal cell 2, wherein a gas barrier material 21 is disposed in a gap formed by the side surface of the liquid crystal cell 2, the protective sheet 1 and the frame body 3.
