The invention relates to a direct doubleacting hydraulic shock absorber comprising a cylinder 17 having an end wall 19, and a piston A, from respective ends of which extend a chamber 33 and a passage 35, the chamber 33 being provided with a valve seat 41, a retainer 44 having a valve pin 43 on which a valve 42 is movable to control flow between the passage 35 and the chamber 33, and a spring 46 carried by the retainer 44 and acting on the valve 42. According to the invention, the retainer 44 is rotatably mounted and has a surface 47 cooperating with a cam ring 50 under the loading of a spring 61, the retainer 44 and the end wall 19 being provided with inter-engaging means 49, 22, whereby relative rotation between the piston A and end wall 19 results in relative rotation between the retainer 44 and cam ring 50 to adjust the retainer 44 inwardly or outwardly of the piston chamber 33. The cam 50, Figs. 6 and 8, has three circularly-spaced camming portions, each comprising a low portion 52, an intermediate portion 54, and a high portion 53. When the shock absorber is adjusted for providing maximum restriction of flow through the valve 42, three circularly-spaced lugs 47 on the retainer 44, engage the three high cam portions 53 of the cam 50. By completely collapsing the shock absorber and engaging a lug 49 of the retainer 44 with a recess 22 in the end wall 19, and relatively rotating the piston and end wall 19, the lugs 47 can be brought into engagement with either of the portions 54 or 52 of the cam 50. The valve pin 43 has three spaced portions 43b, 43c, and 43d, of progressively increasing diameter. This provides an adjustable annular orifice between the pin 43 and the valve 42, adjustable according to the setting of the retainer 44 relative to the cam 50. The portion 43c is of frusto-conical shape.</p> |
