PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that can surely process data such as a remaining quantity of ink even when a storage element having a small storage capacity is used as one to be mounted on an ink cartridge, and also to provide an ink cartridge for this printer. SOLUTION: In the printer 1, a sequential access-type EEPROM having a small storage capacity is used as a storage element 80 to be mounted on an ink cartridge 107K, 107F. In this storage element 80, data such as a remaining quantity of ink are stored as 8 bit data. Meantime, a print controller 40 in the printer 1 has an EEPROM 90 for storing data relating to the ink cartridge, the data such as a remaining quantity of ink is stored as 32 bit data. If no cartridge is exchanged, 32 bit data are used and, if the cartridge is exchanged, subsequent control is carried out on the basis of the data of the ink cartridge 107K.
