The method involves evaluating an operating parameter of a drive unit using an evaluation unit (10) when a vehicle is stopped, where a condition of a clutch (1) is evaluated as the operating parameter. A type of a driver (85) is recognized by determining whether the clutch is operated during vehicle stop. The drive unit is switched off using a switching off unit (15) based on the determined driver type and operating parameter or independent of the operating parameter during vehicle stop when a drive train is opened. An independent claim is also included for a drive unit operating device comprising an evaluation unit.
