<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the pressure-proof strength of a pressure sensing part without enlarging an electromagnetic coil or the like in an external control type control valve for a variable displacement compressor. <P>SOLUTION: The control valve is constituted to operate a first valve part to open/close so that intermediate pressure Psh becomes reference pressure by the operation of a power element 6 and to reduce the reference pressure by the set differential pressure by the opening/closing operation of a second valve part. The set differential pressure varies according to the amount of current supplied to a solenoid 3. That is, the set pressure can be freely regulated by externally setting the amount of pressure reduction in the form of set differential pressure to the reference pressure always controlled to be constant.
