PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve sure recovery performance for recover from a discharge failure, and to reduce a waste ink amount accompanied by recovery action. SOLUTION: An elastic body having a slit is made to contact with the discharge surface of a recording head. A slit width is expanded and contracted by the deformation of the elastic body. The removal of bubbles remaining in the vicinity of a discharge port and the refreshing of a viscosity-increased ink are carried out by drawing out and pushing in the ink from the discharge port.
