<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film, retardation element and polarizing plate, which stably express proper optical characteristics over long periods, and to provide a liquid crystal display element that uses these, and a composition that forms the retardation film. <P>SOLUTION: The composition for forming the retardation film contains (A) an inorganic particle, which exhibits shape anisotropy having major and minor axes, in which a refractive index in the major-axis direction is smaller than an average refractive index in a direction perpendicular to the major axis direction, and which has birefringence, and (B) a binder that is a curable compound for binding the inorganic particle (A). The retardation film is formed by the composition for forming the retardation film, wherein the difference between refractive indexes, in a direction which is parallel to a film plane and in the film thickness direction is caused in the retardation film formed by the composition, and the refractive index, in a direction parallel to the film plane becomes smaller than that in the film thickness direction. The direction of the major axis of the inorganic particle (A) is arranged substantially parallel to the film plane, and the orientation in the major axis direction of the inorganic particle (A), in the film plane, is random. Accordingly, the difference between refractive indices in a direction parallel to the film plane and that in the film thickness direction is caused by the difference between the refractive index in the major axis direction of the inorganic particle (A) and that in a direction perpendicular to the major axis direction, thereby the refractive index, in a direction parallel to the film plane, becomes smaller than that in the film thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
