<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element which can obtain change control characteristics as designed and obtain near-field light with a controlled polarization component as exit light by controlling shapes and alignment conditions of microstructures. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing element includes microstructures 11 arranged as extending in an X direction in a glass layer 12. A first structure line 13 and a second structure line 14 are alternately arranged in a Y direction, each line comprising a plurality of microstructures 11 arranged in the X-direction spaced apart from one another. The microstructures are arranged in such a manner that: in the Y direction from one end 11a in the major axis direction of the microstructure in the first structure line 13, the other end in the major axial direction of one microstructure of microstructures adjoining to each other in the second structure line is positioned; and in the Y direction from the other end of the microstructure in the first structure line, one end of the other microstructure in the microstructures adjoining to each other is positioned. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
