PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve the smear characteristics in a solid-state imaging element that improves the smear characteristic, by applying a negative voltage to a shielding film. SOLUTION: When a reading pulse 131 is applied to reading voltage, pulse voltage 135 which is homopolar to the reading pulse 131 is applied to a conductive shielding film, and the pulse voltage 135 is turned off prior to the timing of an application end of the reading pulse 131. Since negative voltage is applied during a period, when no positive voltage has to be applied to the shielding film, this makes a negative voltage application period long and further improves the smear characteristic.
