PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device and a projection type image display device capable of restraining cost rise of the entire device even when using light beams of four or more colors. SOLUTION: These devices comprise a light source 10 which emits white light, a mirror 121 which separates the light into blue and green spectra and red and yellow spectra, a mirror 122 which separates the blue spectrum and green spectrum, a mirror 124 which separates the red spectrum and yellow spectrum, a liquid crystal panel 30B, a liquid crystal panel 30G, and a liquid crystal panel 30R which modulate each color component light according to an input signal, a liquid crystal panel 30Ye which modulates the yellow spectrum, and a cross dichroic cube 60 which synthesizes light emitted from the liquid crystal panel 30B, the liquid crystal panel 30G, and the liquid crystal panel 30R.
