PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of installing a sliding door capable of improving the aesthetic appearance of the sliding door vertically extending from near a floor surface to near a ceiling surface by a simple structure and also provide a sliding door unit. SOLUTION: This sliding door unit 10 comprises a ceiling rail 20 having an engagement piece 22 downwardly extending from a mounting lateral piece 21 attached to the ceiling surface 1a with a fixture 24, the sliding door 11 having, at the top end, a slide guide recessed groove 12a into which the engagement piece of the ceiling rail is inserted and having, at the bottom end, sash rollers 13 rollingly engaged with the floor rail 30, and temporary holding means 12a, 22 for holding the ceiling rail temporarily on the sliding door during the installation. When the sliding door is installed, the ceiling rail is inserted into the recessed groove, the sash rollers are engaged with the floor rail and erected with the ceiling rail temporarily held by the temporary holding means, and the ceiling rail is fixed to the ceiling surface.
