A dry soluble granular or crystalline material, e.g. sugar, is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. water, by maintaining a stream of solvent in constant circulation between a tank 10 and a supply of the material, cascading the material downwardly into the solvent, agitating, at the point of contact, by sucking in air, and finally enclosedly conveying the mixture of solvent, material and air back to the tank wherein dissolution is completed. At the contact point both the material and solvent are spread out into ribbon form. Suitable apparatus comprises a converter 18 having a chamber, a pump 16 connected to an inlet duct forcing solvent through the chamber, a pump 14 of greater capacity than the pump 16 for evacuating the mixture of solvent, material and air through an outlet duct, and a tank 10 provided with stirrers. In operation, solvent in the tank 10 passes to the converter via foot 23 and piping 20, 24 and 26. The mixture of material, solvent and air passes back to the tank via piping 29, 30 and 31 and thence either branch 32 or 33 when the tank 10 is duplicated. An air bleed or protector assembly 19 is connected to the inlet piping 27 of the evacuating pump 14, a switch for shutting of the pumps being floatactuated should the liquid level in the converter reach a predetermined point (see Fig. 9, not shown). |
