Organo tin hydrides are produced by reacting an organo tin halide containing one, two, or three organic groups with an organo aluminium hydride. The organo tin halide may contain saturated, or unsaturated, aliphatic, or aromatic, hydrocarbon groups, which may be substituted. The organo aluminium hydride may be a mono-, or di-, alkyl aluminium hydride containing aliphatic hydrocarbon groups containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, or isopropyl, which may be prepared by reacting aluminium trialkyl with Al and H2. Reaction may be at -120 to 50 DEG C. in an inert liquid solvent for the tin halide. In Example 1, (C2H5)2SnCl2 is reacted with (C2H5)2AlH in mixed ethers to form (C2H5)2SnH2.ALSO:SnH4 or organo tin hydrides are produced by reacting a tin halide, or an organo tin halide containing one, two, or three organic groups with an organo aluminium hydride.
