PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a playback apparatus, data playback method, control program and recording medium in which a menu can be displayed during title playback without interrupting the title playback, regarding contents that are not compatible with a pop-up menu. SOLUTION: A video disk player 1 includes: a disk reading unit 20 for reading contents from an optical disk 10; playback units 60, 70 which obtain output of data from the disk reading unit 20 to perform content playback; an output unit 80; an entire control unit 40 for controlling an entire playback apparatus; a user operating unit 50 which outputs operation information to the entire control unit 40 in response to operation by a user; and a state management unit 30 for managing an output state of the video disk player 1. For example, the playback unit 60 controls playback of a title and the playback unit 70 controls playback of a menu, thereby concurrently playing back the title and the menu on a display.
