PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the time required for detecting a boundary between a recorded area and an unrecorded area in a recording medium by a binary search method. SOLUTION: An average time Ta required for searching the whole search area has the relation with a search width Lx as shown in Fig.5. An appropriate value of the search width Lx is set, thereby minimizing the average time Ta required for searching the whole search area. Thus, a table in which the types and the rotation speeds are associated with the optimum search widths Lx is stored in a table memory in advance at the stage of shipment.
