PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sheet-through type image reader that utilizes an electroluminescence (EL) element as a light source, can secure a required quantity of light, and can be miniaturized and thinned. SOLUTION: The image reader optically reads a document image at a read position A while an automatic document carrying device conveys a document D directly on read glass 12. A first EL element 40A is arranged on the read glass 12 while its light emission section 41A faces the glass surface. Also, a second EL element 40B is arranged at a manuscript guide member 27 while its light emission section 41B faces a read position A. Light radiated from the EL elements 40A, 40B is applied to the manuscript D to be conveyed at the read position A, and the reflection light enters a photoelectric conversion element 49.
