The invention relates to a system, comprising:
- a lifting device 10 for lifting a motor vehicle 200;
- a support structure 234 for mounting the lifting device 10 in a pit 202;
- a carriage 300 for supporting the lifting device 10 from the support structure 234 and being movable within the support structure 234, and
wherein the lifting device 10 is capable of moving between an extended position in which a portion of the lifting device 10 extends from the support structure 234, and a retracted position in which a substantial entirety of the lifting device 10 is positioned within the support structure 234, and the cover 232 translates in response to movement of the carriage 300 so that the lifting device 10 can be moved between the extended and retracted positions at any location within a range of travel of the carriage 300 within the support structure 234.
