A fishing reel 2 comprises a spool 10' for carrying fishing line 12 and a line clip (60, Fig. 4) for selectively fixing a predetermined length of fishing line dispensed from the spool, wherein the line clip is moveable relative to the spool. Typically, the clip comprises an arm (62, Fig 4) or an adaptor 22 which may have arms 30, 32. The arm may comprise an aperture 34 or a hook (64, Fig. 4) for retaining a predetermined length of line. A method of fishing with a rod (8, Fig. 1) and reel, wherein the reel has a spool and a line clip, comprises casting the line from the spool to a required length and moving the line clip relative to the spool to fix the length of cast line at the required length.
