A compound comprising silicon and/or tin nano-dispersed within a lithium-containing framework, wherein at least a portion of the lithium-containing framework is formed from a lithium oxide. The compound is suitably formed by exposing an alloy comprising silicon and/or tin and lithium to oxygen. The compound is suitably used to form a battery anode.
