Apparatus for transferring workpieces of polygonal cross-section to a required working position, accurately locating them in said position and also varying their orientation consists of an open frame 1 movable both vertically and horizontally with respect to fixed stops 15 and 18. Square section bars 20 (Fig. 9), are delivered to the apparatus by a rollerway 11 so arranged (see Fig. 2) that the frame members 2, 3 can pass through the gaps between its rollers 12. When a bar on the rollerway is over the frame the latter is raised from the Fig. 1 position and moved to the right until fixed stop 15 has pushed the rod against a stop surface 9 on the frame. The frame, now wholly supporting the bar, is then moved to the left until the bar has passed the other fixed stop 18. Further movements of the frame can then be made so as tip the bar one or more times about the upper edge of frame stop 9 and so bring any of the surfaces a, b, c, d of the bar into contact with the horizontal surface between frame stops 9 and 10. Finally, the bar is held in its working position by clamping between frame stop 10 and the vertical surface 19 of fixed stop 18. The shape of stops 9, 10, 15 and 18 may be modified to adapt the apparatus to handle bars of other than rectangular cross-section. |
