<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a frosting detecting device with little deterioration of a light emitting element even in long time use, reducing a load in maintenance for exchanging the light emitting element. <P>SOLUTION: This frosting detecting device includes a sensor 7 having a light emitting element for emitting the light toward a frosting heat exchanger 3 and a light receiving element for receiving the light reflected by the frost adhered to the heat exchanger 3 and generating an electric signal corresponding to the amount of the received light and outputting it, a defrosting portion for eliminating frost adhered to the heat exchanger 3 by using a heater 10, and a circuit 9 having a computing circuit for computing by using the electric signal from the light receiving element of the sensor 7 and having a control section for controlling the defrosting portion based on a result of computing by the computing circuit.
