The method involves supplying air into a cylinder (2) using a suction tube (9) of an internal combustion engine (1). Exhaust gas is exhausted from the cylinder using an exhaust gas section (12) of the engine. An amount of air led through the gas section is increased dependent on a condition of the gas section. The condition of the gas section is determined as a temperature of the exhaust gas and/or as the temperature of components arranged in the gas section. An air-fuel-ratio is increased with an equal torque by increasing quantity of air supplied into the tube. An independent claim is also included for a computer program for operating an internal combustion engine.
