PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which is an electrochemical display element having high display contrast and white display reflectance and hardly causes fluctuation of the reflectance in repeated driving. SOLUTION: The electrochemical display element includes at least one kind of electrochromic material and an electrolyte which reversibly develops or erases color by at least one side of electrochemical oxidation reaction and reduction reaction between opposed electrodes and performs color tone change by a driving operation of the opposed electrodes, wherein at least one side electrode comprises an aromatic combined material which has four alkyl substituted groups and includes substituted groups of nitrogen-containing saturated complex ring such as pyrrolidine ring and mercapto group or the like, the combined material is a polymer compound having an average mol.wt. of 5,000 or more and the polymer compound has chain-like shape, branched shape and network shape and has polyacetylene as a main chain in the molecule.
