The calender has an upper roll (20) and a lower roll (19), where relative distances of bearings (21a, 21b, 22a, 22b) of the upper and lower rolls are variable. A measuring device (2) determines thickness of rolling goods, where relative contact pressure of the bearings of the upper and lower rolls on driven and drive sides are controlled independent of each other based on output values of the measuring device. The crowning of the rolls is adjustable by controlling the internal pressure of the rolls, where the crowning is adjustable based on the output values of the measuring device. An independent claim is also included for a method for smoothing of a web material.
