The method involves decoupling a control input in a transforming and galvanic manner. The input is switched on/off of via transmission of current or voltage impulses of a control unit (15) as a clock pulse source that outputs three different conditions, and via bipolar voltage impulses. The input is charged by the voltage impulse of a polarity, where charging of the input remains such that a switching element e.g. MOSFET (8), is switched on. The input is discharged by the voltage impulse with reverse polarity by another control unit such that the switching element is switched off. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a HID lamp with full bridge inverters with four switches.
