In a gear-hobbing or other machine, the work-table 10 is driven from a shaft 11 through single-helical gears 12, 13, a worm 15 and worm-wheel 16. To correct any error of movement of the table relative to a tool due to inaccuracies in the driving-train, an errorcam 17 engages a follower 18, which moves the pinion 13 axially along the pinion 12, thus increasing or decreasing the speed of the table 10. The cam is produced by fixing the axial position of the pinion 13 and recording the error of relative movements between the tool and the work. The invention may be adapted for correcting errors in rectilinear motions, and the cam may be carried by any member receiving motion from the drive-means.
