PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalyst capable of removing a heavy metal ion present in a liquid by precipitating it as a heavy metal by efficiently reducing it by light irradiation at a low cost without requiring a precious metal such as platinum, and a method for removing a heavy metal ion from a liquid containing the heavy metal ion using the photocatalyst. SOLUTION: The cerium oxide photocatalyst for removing the heavy metal ion in the liquid is constituted by loading (1) cerium oxide with (2) at least one different kind of element selected from the group consisting of calcium, strontium, yttrium and lanthanum. Loadings of the different kind of element are 0.1-100 mol%, preferably 1-50 mol%, particularly preferably 5-20 mol% making (1) cerium oxide as reference. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
