PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a vehicle and its control method capable of expanding a scope of energy-saving operation by an engine stop without impairing air conditioning comfortability. SOLUTION: The air conditioner for the vehicle is provided with a compressor 3 driven by an engine 2 to compress refrigerant, a radiator 4 to radiate heat of the compressed refrigerant, an expansion valve 5 to reduce the pressure of the refrigerant after heat radiation, a heat absorber 6 to allow the pressure-reduced refrigerant to absorb heat, an input part 8 to which selection information of an air conditioning priority mode and an energy saving priority mode is input, and a control part 9 which outputs either idle stop permission request, idle stop prohibition request, or idle stop cancellation request to the engine 2 based on the threshold value singly selected from the threshold value concerning the air conditioning priority mode and the threshold value concerning the energy saving priority mode at least based on the selection information input to the input part 8.
