PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of restraining occurrence of background stains on a formed image even when an interval from the end of an image forming operation and the start of the subsequent image forming operation is made longer. SOLUTION: After a toner image on a photoreceptor is transferred and then an image forming operation is finished, a control section 200 executes a cleaning mode until toner remaining from the downstream side of the contact part of the transfer roller 15 with the photoreceptor to the contact part of a cleaning brush 23 with the photoreceptor on the photoreceptor 1 is transferred to a cleaning brush 23 and then to a recovery roller 24.
