PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce sticking or sticking force of an attachment on an image holder to a charging roll in comparison with constitution of bringing the charging roll into contact with the image holder by the own weight of a charging unit. SOLUTION: This charging apparatus 2 comprises the charging unit 10 including the charging roll 11 contacting the image holder 1 to charge the surface of the image holder 1, and a support mechanism 20 supporting the charging unit 10 in a state of applying a force f in the direction to separate the charging roll 11 from the image holder 1, to the charging unit 10 so that contact load F of the charging roll 11 to the image holder 1 is smaller than contact load when bringing the charging roll 11 into contact with the image holder 1 by the own weight of the charging unit 10.
