PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a start control device for an internal combustion engine capable of inhibiting self ignition of the internal combustion engine, securing good startability of the internal combustion engine, and improving performance. SOLUTION: When CPU of an engine ECU determines that coolant temperature Tw is higher than a predetermined value Twini (Yes in step S2), and that engine stop time tstp is longer than a predetermined value tmin (Yes in step S3), the CPU outputs command signal for retarding intake valve close timing (step S5).
