PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emulsion type surface sizing agent for paper making which is excellent in mechanical stability, various sizing effects, and reduced foaming when coated. SOLUTION: The surface sizing agent for paper making includes an emulsion obtained by carrying out emulsion polymerization of a monomer group (B) containing hydrophilic unsaturated monomers and hydrophobic unsaturated monomers, in the presence of copolymer salts (A) containing a monomer group (a) as raw materials which contains unsaturated dicarboxylic acids andα-olefins, excluding styrenes.
