A compound input gear assembly (30) has four planetary gear assemblies (31,40,60,80) having sun gears (32,42,62,82), planet gear carriers (34,44,64,84) and ring gears (36,66,86). Two drive chain assemblies (50,70) are provided where each has a drive chain sprocket (52,72), a driven chain sprocket (56,76) and a multiple link chain (54,74). Six connecting shafts (104,106,108,110,112,114) interconnect the gears and carriers of the gear assemblies to each other and to the sprockets and chains of the chain assemblies. Four friction clutches (14,16,18,20) are coupled to the input gear assembly.
