PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for calculating toner consumption with high accuracy while adding continuity of dots in a scan direction of an exposure beam and a direction vertical to it in spite of a simple method. SOLUTION: A line image having lines extending in a sub-scan direction is formed of various line widths, and toner consumption per dot is measured and stored as toner consumption base data. In obtaining toner consumption in actual image formation, the number of dots is counted by sorting the dots by the number of consecutive dots in a main scan direction, based on an image signal, and values which are obtained by multiplying count values of dots on respective sorts by a weighting coefficient defined on the basis of the toner consumption base data, are summed up.
