SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR IMAGE STITCHING

An image stitching method is provided where the registration of two images to be stitched together is optimized by down sampling the input images and maximizing the normalized correlation until the best transformation matrix is found. The result can then be promoted to the next level in the down sampled image pyramid until the best transformation is found in the original input image level. Once the registration has been completed, a linear intensity normalization step can be used to linearly remap pixels from one image to the other. A merge step can then be applied, in one of four ways, to produce the output image that includes the two input images fused together. The output image may then be subjected to a non-linear intensity normalization step where the intensities in the output image are modified non-linearly to normalize the brightness throughout the entire image.
