Disclosed is a process for reacting normal-butyraldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst to produce trimethylolpropane and ditrimethylolpropane. The process comprises the following steps (I) to (III): (I) reacting normal-butyraldehyde with formaldehyde (1) in the presence of a basic catalyst (1) to yield a reaction mixture containing trimethylolpropane, ditrimethylolpropane and 2-ethyl-2-propenal; (II) distilling the reaction mixture to collect 2-ethyl-2-propenal; and (III) adding 2-ethyl-2-propenal collected, formaldehyde (2) and optionally a basic catalyst (2) to the distillation residual solution yielded after the collection of 2-ethyl-2-propenal and allowing the reaction of producing ditrimethylolpropane to proceed, wherein formaldehyde and the basic catalyst are supplied in the steps (I) and (II) in specified amounts. The process enables to produce ditrimethylolpropane with a high degree of efficiency. By employing the process, the yield of di-TMP can be significantly improved, and the amount of a by-product bis-TMP relative to the amount of the desired product di-TMP can be reduced significantly. Therefore, the process enables to produce di-TMP with a high degree of efficiency and in an industrially advantageous manner.
|
