PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner which can surely discharge air in a pressure chamber even if solid particles are mixed in operating oil fed into the pressure chamber. SOLUTION: In the chain tensioner 1 in which a plunger 6 is axially and slidably inserted into a cylinder 5, an oil feeding passage 9 for introducing the operating oil into the pressure chamber 8 surrounded by the cylinder 5 and the plunger 6 is formed in the cylinder 5, the plunger 6 is energized in a direction where the plunger 6 protrudes from the cylinder 5 by a return spring 17, and a chain 4 is pressed by the plunger 6, three of more through-holes 19 penetrating from the external periphery to the internal periphery of the plunger 6 are formed at a protruded part of the plunger 6 from the cylinder 5 at intervals in the circumference direction of the plunger 6, a grooved pin 20 is pressed into each through-hole 19, and the air in the pressure chamber 8 is discharged through the through-holes 19.
