PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily determine whether or not plaque is present on an inner wall of a blood vessel. SOLUTION: This blood vessel observation apparatus includes an insertion section insertable into the blood vessel, illumination means for emitting an illumination light from the distal end of the insertion section toward the inside of the blood vessel, light detection means detecting a light reflected at the blood vessel inner wall at the distal end of the insertion section and transmitting the detected light to the proximal end of the insertion section, and image construction means connected to the proximal end of the insertion section and constructing the image based on the light detected by the light detection means. A light having a wavelength band whose plaque absorption is higher than other wavelength bands is used as the illumination light by the illumination means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
