Provided is a linear motor, which uses its driving magnet commonly as a magnetic scale and can make the signal outputted by a magnetic sensor, similar to an ideal sine wave. The linear motor comprises a plurality of driving magnets (5) having its N-poles and S-poles arranged alternately and formed in a direction perpendicular to a row direction, an armature (10) for performing linear motions relative to the row direction of the driving magnets (5) such that it confronts the driving magnets (5) through clearances, and a magnetic sensor (12) for detecting the magnetic fields of the driving magnets (5) while linearly moving together with the armature (10) relative to the driving magnets (5). The linear motor is characterized in that the portion of each driving magnet (5) to be passed by the magnetic sensor (12) in the top plan view of the driving magnets (5) is so shaped that the central portion (18) of the armature (10) in the moving direction has a larger breadth (W2) than the breadth (W1) of two end portions (19).
