The system has a scanning-laser-radar (102) provided for recording distance data. A parking place determining unit (108) is provided for recognizing a main reference corner and a downstream reference corner from obstacle corners for determining a destination parking place, where the downstream reference corner defines an obstacle corner, which exists in the direction of the adjacent spaces in the direction opposite to a width direction of the vehicle from the main reference corner. A point is provided on an effective cluster within a distance between the vehicle width and vehicle length. An independent claim is also included for a method for recognizing the destination parking place of the vehicle.
