The device has a receiver unit (3) arranged to receive a radiation portion that corresponds to radioactive radiation or secondary radiation from a defined volume range of a container (4) produced by reciprocal effect of the radioactive radiation with a medium (5) i.e. bulk goods. The receiver unit is designed as an imaging detector that detects the radiation portion in form of an intensity image. A regulation/evaluation unit (6) generates and provides information about process variable e.g. level, by image evaluation based on the intensity image supplied by the receiver unit.
