[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] Radio and other high-frequency receivers with the anode circuits fed from ripple-containing supplies such as A.C. or D.C. mains or rectified alternating current, include one or more valves of the type having a gas filling and an external control electrode, hum being thus reduced. When the valve is used as a high-frequency amplifier, ripple frequencies are suppressed ; when used as a detector, the amplification decreases as the modulation frequency increases. The valve may be constructed as described in Specification 307,826, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], and may have a filling of helium, argon, nitrogen, or other gas or mercury vapour at 10<-2>-10<-4> mm. A quantity of mercury or mercury amalgam may be included, or a mercury compound may be decomposed during or after manufacture. The filament may be fed with raw alternating current.
