If the abnormality diagnosis of a starter motor has not been completed and an abnormality diagnosis condition is satisfied, the abnormality diagnosis is performed (S110 to S140). After the abnormality diagnosis, it is determined that the abnormality diagnosis has not been completed if a post-diagnosis completion time t reaches a predetermined value tref (S230, S240). Then, if an automatic stop condition, including a condition that the abnormality diagnosis has been completed and the starter motor is normal, is satisfied, the engine is automatically stopped. Therefore, it is possible to avoid an event in which a result of the abnormality diagnosis of the starter motor is retained for a relatively long time, and to avoid an event in which if an abnormality occurs in the starter motor at or after the elapse of a certain amount of time following the completion of the abnormality diagnosis, the abnormality is not detected and the engine is automatically stopped.
