A gauge for measuring the circumference of a tube or like annular body, comprises a band of flexible spring material having two free ends, a plurality of spaced contact elements on the band for contacting the body, and means for measuring the spacing between the free ends of the band. The construction shown in Fig. 9 is adapted to measure the external circumference of a body P and the band 84 having a plurality of inwardly-directed contacts 85. The free ends of the band 84 are coupled to measuring means 88, 89 comprising two blocks 27, 28, Fig. 8, with opposed inclined faces, one face carrying a reference surface 71 against which air is discharged from an orifice 70 in the other face, the resulting air pressure behind the orifice 70 being a measure of the spacing between the blocks. The blocks 27, 28 are coupled by leafsprings 90, 91 to a support 92. The gauge is mounted on a table 87 movable axially of the body P and cam-operated means are used to force the blocks 27 and 28 apart, against the action of the spring band 84, each time the table 87 is to be moved to a different gauging position. The construction shown in Fig. 2 is for the measurement of the internal circumference of a body W and comprises a vertical column 11 housing an annular band 25 of flexible spring material with work-engaging contact elements 54 on the band projecting out through holes in the column 11. The free ends of the band 25 are coupled to two gauging blocks such as 27 and 28 in Fig. 8. The body W rests on a table 14 slidable on the column 11 and supported in any required position by springs (not shown in Fig. 2). Cam-operated means 60 is used to contract the band 25 whilst the table 14 with the body W thereon is displaced relatively to the band. Specification 658,902 is referred to.
