The invention is directed to copy protected paper, to a method for producing said paper, the use of a specific coating for copy protection of paper, and a method for protecting a printable paper substrate from being copied. The copy protected substrate of the invention comprises a printable substrate having, on a printed side, a transparent coating comprising an organic polymer, wherein the refractive index of said transparent coating differs from the refractive index of said substrate with at least 0.1.
