Copolymers of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid are modified to render them soluble in water and in organic solvents by reacting them with an aminohydroxy compound having a boiling point above 160 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and a molecular weight above 85. The aminohydroxy compounds may be: 2-amino-2 methyl-1, 3-propanediol; 2-amino-2-ethyl-1, 3-propanediol; 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol; tris (hydroxymethyl)-aminoethane; 1-amino-2-methyl-2- propanol; 3-amino-2-pentanol; 2-amino-1-phenyl-1-butanol; 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol; N1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-1, 2-propanediamine; tris (hydroxymethyl) dimethyl-methane 2-amino-1-butanol; 2-amino-2-methyl-3-pentanol; 2-amino-1-phenyl-1-propanol; 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1, 3 propanediol; 2-dimethylamino-2-ethyl-1, 3 propanediol; N1-(2-hydroxypropyl)-2-methyl-1, 2-propane diamine; 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1, 3-propanediol. The reaction may be effected in a solvent, especially ethyl alcohol, although acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, isopropanol or methyl ethyl ketone may be used. The modified copolymers may be used as adhesives, and in solution together with a halogenated hydrocarbon aerosol propellant, e.g. monofluorotrichloromethane, as a hair spray lacquer.ALSO:Hair spray lacquers are obtained by adding a halogenated hydrocarbon aerosol propellant to a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid which has been modified by reaction with an aminohydroxy compound having a boiling point above 160 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and a molecular weight above 85 (see Group IV(a)). The aminohydroxy compounds may be 2-amino-2 methyl - 1,3 - propanediol; 2 - amino 2 - ethyl-1,3 - propanediol; 2 - amino; 2 methyl; 1-propanol; tris (hydroxymethyl) - aminoethane; 1 - amino - 2 - methyl - 2 - propanol; 3 - amino-2 - pentanol; 2 - amino - 1 - phenyl - 1 - butanol; 2 - dimethylamino - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol; N1 - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 2 - methyl - 1,2 - propane diamine; tris (hydroxymethyl) dimethylaminomethane; 2 - amino - 1 - butanol; 2 - amino-2 - methyl - 3 - pentanol; 2 - amino - 1 phenyl-1 - propanol; 2 - dimethylamino - 2 - methyl-1,3, propanediol; 2 - dimethylamino - 2 - ethyl-1,3, propanediol; N1 - (2 - hydroxypropyl)-2 - methyl - 1,2 - propane diamine; and 2-dimethylamino - 2 - methyl - 1,3 - propanediol. Ethanol may also be added. |
