The method involves providing a computer model (22) for determination of a combustion point (T) of an internal combustion engine i.e. Otto-engine, after one cycle depending on an operational variable. A reference combustion-point (T0) is provided. A singular traverse of the computer model with a predetermined operational variable is provided for determination of the combustion point. The determined point is compared with the reference-combustion point. The internal combustion engine is operated with simultaneous maintenance of the predetermined operational variable depending on the comparison.
