PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for objectively and accurately identifying a depression or depressed state based on substance measurement. SOLUTION: In this method, a protein cleavage product appearing substantially and specifically in a patient of the depression or depressed state is detected. This peptide is at least a kind of protein cleavage product selected from the group consisting of especially albumin, alpha-fibrinogen, beta-fibrinogen, apolipoprotein A-I, apolipoprotein A-IV, apolipoprotein C-III, apolipoprotein E, alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein, expression product of rat kidney specific (KS) probable-gene gene, inter-alpha (globulin) inhibitor H2, brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor 3, organic anion transporter 3, probable zinc finger protein H101, and complement C3.
